A priority in the evolution of ransomware recovery

The first ransomware appeared in 1989. It was distributed via floppy disks; its encryption could be easily reversed, and the ransom of $189 was to be paid to a PO box in Panama. Since those humble beginnings, ransomware has evolved into the massive international cybercrime it is today, that causes billions in damage to organizations big or small.

As new successful attacks are reported daily, it seems that the defenses against the ever more sophisticated attack vectors are lagging the attackers. As many organizations continue to struggle to defend themselves against ransomware, it is worth looking at the currently available technologies and how effective they are in combating it.

IT-Security cannot guarantee the defense against ransomware

Obviously, the best ransomware attack would be the one that does not even reach the network. Security vendors are working continuously to keep pace with the attackers but have no definitive recipe against the whack-a-mole of new security threats like APTs (Advanced Persistent Threats) and Zero Day Exploits, let alone the fact that human insiders still pose one of the biggest risks to organizations’ networks. IDC recently revealed in its The State of Ransomware and Disaster Preparedness: 2022 survey that 93 percent of organizations suffered a data-related business disruption during the past 12 months, and 67.8 percent of respondents experienced four or more such disruptions.

IT-Security, generally the first line of defense, cannot defend against all attacks and cannot guarantee 100 percent security. As a result, all organizations need to plan for the worst case of a successful attack on their network, which is not any more just an ‘if’ or a ‘when’ but more a ‘how often’.

Backups do not have the capability to prevent data loss or downtime

    Download Clean Space – MajorGeeks

Clean Space can remove unneeded files that waste space on your drive and protect your privacy by making deleted files unrecoverable.

To get the most out of Clean Space, you can run it in Administrator mode, or the program will notify you and set Administrator mode by default on the first run if you so choose.

After that, the program is straightforward to use. It immediately scans on startup, does so quickly, and returns how many files it can delete. You can also recalculate, for example, if you left the program running and came back later, as more files are probably available to remove now.

A details tab breaks down what is found in each category, including Windows 10, Windows 10 Apps, Media Player, Skype, OneDrive, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and any other apps or browsers you have installed. I don’t see any files in the remove list that could cause problems, but some might want to preserve some files. For example, you can uncheck cookies or address history if you’re going to keep them. In other words, it should be safe to run with the default settings.

All you have to do now is click delete, and you’re ready to go.

Of course, people will always want to know how it compares to CCleaner or Wise Disk Cleaner. CCleaner found 139.6 MB, and Clean Space found 139.8. As you might be aware, Wise Disk Cleaner is much more hardcore than CCleaner, but it’s not for everyone. The beautiful thing about Clean Space is it does a similar job to CCleaner but without all the bloat that has been recently added. It also lacks the registry cleaner and startup manager, but if all you want is to clean junk files, this might be a better choice.

    Clean Space is a

Download Secure File Deleter – MajorGeeks

Secure File Deleter allows you to completely and securely delete selected files from your system.

As you know, when you delete a file or folder, it’s still possible to recover it, even when you have placed it in the recycle bin and emptied it. Secure File Deleter is explicitly designed to prevent the recovery of those deleted items by replacing the contents with random data or via military-grade cryptography algorithms. You have the choice of an astronomical amount of security algorithms for data destruction. The program can write a combination of ones and zeroes onto each sector of your hard drive or use various other characters rendering the target data useless.

US gets a voice in Epic battle with Apple

Lawyers for Fortnite-maker Epic Games and Apple will face off at an appeals hearing over the tight control of App Store, and US Department of Justice lawyers will get to chime in.

The US justice department wants to have its say on Apple’s antitrust tussle with Epic Games, which is due to be heard on appeal next month—a year after a Californian court ruled largely in favor of the iPhone maker.

On Friday, the appeals court granted the department the right to send a representative to the hearing scheduled for October 21, where both sides are expected to make their case again.

In 2021 a California judge ruled against Fortnite-maker Epic, which had accused Apple of acting like a monopoly in its shop for digital goods or services.

But the judge also barred Apple from prohibiting developers from including in their apps “external links or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms.”

Apple can still mandate that its payment systems is used for in-app transactions.

    Both sides are appealing.

Earlier this year the justice department asked for time at the appeal hearing to air concerns about the trial judge’s interpretation of antitrust law at issue in the case.

“The district court committed several legal errors that could imperil effective antitrust enforcement, especially in the digital economy,” justice department lawyers argued in their brief.

Justice officials have been investigating whether Apple and other tech giants are abusing their market clout with anti-competitive practices.

Attorneys for Apple, Epic and the justice department will all speak to the appeals court, which will also consider their written arguments.

Firefox Browser – open source web browser

I’ve been a devoted FFx user since before it was FFx… There were def some difficult times as it was evolving, but now (60.0 Quantum) it is better than ever… First, Mozilla a non-profit and that is a premium plus… Second, it’s the most customizable browser out there. Between work and play and more work, I spend 10+ hours a day online so my environment is really important to me. I have everything set to calm minimal utilitarian and it’s a comfortable and productive place to be. I haven’t found any other browser as flexible… The toolsaddons are great. I have several common (and free) security addons – Avast Online Security, DisConnect and AdBlocker for Youtube – and no one knows I’m there. I use Video Download Helper daily so I can save vids and watch later locally. I also have a few pdf makers and an ebook reader. Good stuff… FFx did go through a resource hogunstable phase, but it gotten way better. It still uses 2-4 of my cpu and 1.5gb of RAM, but it’s fast, smooth and stable… In my opinion, there is no better browser. I’m glad I’ve stuck with it and am confident that it will continue to get better and even more fun. Its one of my favorite pieces of software and I recommend it to everyone!.. And, no, I don’t work for Mozilla, but I sure wouldn’t mind 🙂 Review details

Young hacker tricks way into Uber’s system: reports

A hacker claiming to be 18 years old posted screenshots taken from inside Uber computers.

Uber said Friday it was investigating a “cybersecurity incident,” declining to comment on reports a young hacker had gained access to the ride-hailing company’s computer network.

Uber put out word of the breach late Thursday in a tweet, and a hacker claiming to be 18 years old then posted screenshots taken from inside Uber computers.

“He says that he simply—having already determined a valid username and password—tricked an Uber staff member into granting him access to internal systems,” independent cybersecurity analyst Graham Cluley said at his website.

Online comments purported to be by the hacker indicated he targeted an Uber employee with notifications for more than an hour, then reached out to the worker via WhatsApp claiming to be member of the company’s tech support team.

“Many other companies are probably at risk of falling for a similar trick,” Cluley said.

Uber said Friday that its services were all operational and that it had “no evidence that the incident involved access to sensitive data” such as users’ trip history.

Employee software tools shut down as a precaution were being gradually restarted, the San Francisco based company added.

“There’s a reason cybersecurity experts say that the human is often the weakest link,” said Ray Kelly, a fellow at Synopsys Software Integrity Group in Silicon Valley.

“Whether it be phishing/SMS attacks or a simple phone call to get an employee to give up their credentials, ‘social engineering’ is going to be the easiest route for a malicious actor.”

    Is Blackmail a Crime?

It is said that the original term blackmail started on the borders of England and Scotland. Landowners in England used the term meaning payments made for protection from thieves and marauders in the Scottish Borders.  You may have even heard of blackmail in movies or on TV. Portrayed as this glamorous thing where someone is trying to get something from another person. In reality, blackmail is a serious crime that can have major consequences for both the victim and the perpetrator. If you’re a victim of Instagram blackmail or any other type of internet scam, it’s important to understand the ins and outs of the crime so that you can protect yourself.

    What is Blackmail?

Blackmail is essentially extorting someone for money or information. The perpetrator threatens to release damaging information about the victim unless they are paid off.

This could be anything from blackmailing someone for financial gain to releasing private photos or videos as leverage.

In some cases, the information that is being used to blackmail someone may not even be true. However, the threat of the damage that could be done is enough to make the victim comply with the demands of the perpetrator. Some examples are listed below. Why is blackmail a crime? Because it’s illegal

    Examples:

    • Someone who threatens to harm a victim’s family unless the plaintiff drops the lawsuit.
    • When a person threatens to keep quiet about an extramarital affair in exchange for money.
    • A threat to divulge embarrassing information, photos, or videos to obtain money.
    • Using your feelings as a means of controlling your behavior or persuading you to see things their way describes emotional blackmail.

    Is Blackmail a Federal Crime?

Yes, blackmail is a crime. Even if you get an email blackmailed, it can be still a ground for putting someone in

jv16 PowerTools – registry and system utilities

I have been using CCleaner for about 4-5 years, but I think this is better. I tried free trial because of the recommendation and must say, this is different. It found over 1k non-needed files and now my computer is really faster.

Layout is nice and clean, it’s easy to use and big plus for many language-options. And online-helper. That’s great!

    Highly recommended.

    Review details

The Jv16 is a definite must have for anyone that has a high usage of the system, for instance I use my system for over 18 hours a lot of times the speed and performance drop as you are doing so much on the same. This app helps optimize and speed up.

    Review details

This has many options and built in utilities. The registry tools work wonders, no issues at all.

All the tools work great and this may in fact replace the numerous ones I have installed to do the work of this.

Definitely worth the price for the stability you get compared to others.

Registry Workshop – advanced registry editor

I must agree wholeheartedly with gbjennings. This is indeed the best registry editor around, but it is still a bit expensive compared to others, including a few free regedit replacements.

    Review details

It does what it claims to do and pretty fast to my surprise….however it would be great if it has some kind of “unlocker” to use when I have problem trying to delete some invalid registry keys I found with the it that says “access is denied”.

    Review details

It’s THE best replacement for the lame registry editor that ships with windows. My only negative is that it’s a bit on the ‘pricey’ side. Not everyone can afford it. A drop in price would lead to less piracy and more profit for the author, IMHO.

SIV System Information Viewer – advanced system information

Wow! After running SIV the amount of information that our system provide is amazing and this program delivers. I was blown away about how each section I clicked on display so much information, some I was not aware of, was display so clearly before me. Also this program is Portable which adds to its availability to be put onto a PortableApps USB drive. I appreciate the detail that the author had put into the program. The fonts are easy to read, the sections are specific to what you want to look at, it is a clean interface, and it is FAST.

    rating: Two-Thumbs Up!
Shout out to the author – some nice programming!!!

Get it, use it, rate it!

    Review details

Yes the interface is a technical type view by all means, it’s not flashy whatsoever but this has so many details along with the menus at the bottom, if you want to know what’s what, there probably isn’t another out there that will give you all this information like SIV does. It may take a moment to start up but it’s worth it.

It would be a chapter just to list and explain the menus so I suggest using it and see for yourself just how much this will show you about your PC, IP info, etc…

    Nice work!

WYSIWYG Web Builder – create a website without coding

I bought this program, and have some regrets. Working at a fairly simple level within WYSIWYG Web Builder, it works at advertised, and that is all that most people will need. However, importing anything is bad news. The program claims to import HTML, and indeed it does. However once you do that, then try to publish, the headaches begin. No matter how you play with imported content, no matter what the property menu says, and no matter what it looks like within the program, imported content once republished will not retain proper positioning or much formatting. Old fashioned cut and paste (which destroys all formatting) is the only reliable way to get content into this program. A second big issue is that long CSS text blocks in the program do bad things when they are published into a website. Since my own website has been growing for 15 years and is text intensive, using WYSIWYG Web Builder to give it a modern look has become a dubious process. Review details
I’ve used WYSIWYG Web Builder for several months now. During that time I’ve designed and uploaded three web pages with this program. I can’t say enough good things about it. It’s loaded with every utility you would ever need in designing a web page, plus many other features. The interface is comfortable to work in and the FTP program is a breeze to use. Review details
